Dear Parent / Carer,

We are very much looking forward to welcoming your child next Tuesday 27^th June for the Sixth Form Induction Day. We have planned a full timetable for them, including taster lessons, a quiz and fun and games on the field after lunch, including an ice cream van.

Your child should arrive at school between 8am and 8.15am and go directly to the Lower Hex for registration, where they will be able to collect their timetable for the day. If they use any medication, such as an inhaler, epipen or insulin pen, please make sure they bring these with them. Please can you ensure there is money on your child’s School Food ParentPay account so they can purchase food at break and lunchtime (PP students will have their usual food allocation on their accounts).

Your child should attend in their own clothes, making sure they are in something suitable and comfy for the activities on the field. They could bring a water bottle as it looks set to be a pleasantly warm day. They will also need their mobile phone to take part in an online quiz (there is a prize for the winning person / team!).

Sixth Form

Your son/daughter has been selected to attend a Year 7 Art trip to Yorkshire Sculpture Park on Thursday 25^th May 2023 and should have received a letter with the medical consent form attached. The trip is free of charge and is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience a wide range of artists outside of the school environment as well as a chance to practice observational sketching and photography outdoors. In order to secure your child’s place on the trip the final deadline for medical consent forms to be returned to Miss Simms (Technician) is Friday 28^th April. Replacement letters/medical consent forms are available to collect from Miss Simms (Technician) if required.

In February, the Business Department had an exciting opportunity for its business students. They were invited to attend a lecture on Dark Leadership, the negative aspects of leaders, discussing when leaders ‘go bad’.

Fran Adam is a University lecturer and agreed to come in and discuss this really interesting topic with our students

On Tuesday 29th November, the Visual Arts & Technology faculty welcomed Jo Adams into school to host a talk and a live hair and make-up demonstration to a group of students. The talk was open to students in all year groups that may be interested in a career in art and design or simply just curious about what a career in hair, make-up and set design entails. Jo has worked on a huge number of exciting productions ranging from hair and make-up design for a Nikki Minaj music video to the most recent James Bond film. It was fascinating to hear about her experiences on set and the amazing locations her career has taken her so far. Jo spoke a lot about how valuable art and design skills are and how transferable these can be in any chosen career path, which students found very inspirational. The Visual Arts & Technology faculty run the visiting artists programme in which they aim to have at least one visiting creative in school once a term to host either a talk or creative workshop. These experiences allow students to discover new techniques as well as inform them on possible future career paths.

On Friday 18th November, Year 11, 12 and 13 Textiles & Fashion students visited the ‘Knitting and stitching’ show in Harrogate.

The show brings together hundreds of textile workshops, demonstrations, textile art exhibitions and stalls from over 200 of the leading specialist craft suppliers. This year’s show was bursting at the seams with creativity and innovation! Students spent their time at the show gathering primary research, interviewing the exhibiting artists and designers, along with shopping for materials and equipment to support their current Textiles & Fashion projects.

“Students and staff had a fantastic day exploring all that the Knitting and stitching show had to offer this year”, said Miss Simms. “There were so many exciting new techniques and processes explored in the graduate work being exhibited, which will be beneficial to all the students. We can’t wait to see the inspiration come through in their current projects!”

 

We were delighted to welcome PWC in November 2022, who spoke with our Year 12 and Year 13 Business, Maths and Economics students. This gave students invaluable insight into the opportunities available to them.

 

Dan Cordwell is the founder and director of Visions Design Ltd – a Lymm-based graphic design company. He gave a talk to all interested year groups on what it’s like to work in graphic design. He also provided a great insight into the industry for anyone interested in a career in graphic design.

On Monday 12th September local photographer Andrew Collier visited us to run an after-school photography workshop.

The workshop was focused on Architecture photography, specifically capturing interesting viewpoints and lines within architecture and the details within it. Students that attended ranged from Years 8–11 and all students came away with some fantastic images.

Students in Year 10 and 11 that study GCSE Photography or Art will be able to put the skills and techniques learned in this workshop into practice within their current coursework projects.

All students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, exploring many different areas of the school to find interesting architectural points
to photograph.
